Good evening Patty and all,
With such close knitting, there's just got to be precious land involved. :o)
I wonder if it could be the "fief de Bellevue", from which the CHICOINE
derived their surname.
At some point about 1678, Pierre CHICOINE and Pierre BOISSEAU became
co-owners of the seigneurie de Vitré which land became known as Bellevue
(and each half later known as fief Chicoine and fief La Boisselière,
respectively), situated between Contrecoeur and Verchères, on the South
shore of the Saint-Laurent river. This land which ran along the shore
for about 1/2 lieue (about 20 arpents) and in land for 1 lieue (about 40
arpents) cost them 280 livres.
1723-1725), volume 1, f. 324-325v.)
When Pierre BOISSEAU died, his share of the land was divided up between
his wife Anne FOUBERT and his eldest son Antoine. But Antoine was
perennially into debt and his his share of Bellevue was put up for
auction by a creditor.
At the time, 1722, Antoine BOISSEAU held 1/16th of the fief de
Bellevue, and this single portion was estimated to be worth 4,000
livres, a pretty sum in those days!
When Anne FOUBERT died, her share of la BOISSELIERE was divided up
between her children, with 1/4 going to Antoine, the eldest son, and the
rest being divided amongst her six other children in equal share. One
of her daughters, Marie BOISSEAU, had married Paul CHICOINE, son of Pierre.
Well, one day in 1754, Antoine BOISSEAU somehow received a swift smack
on his head with a shovel and died. His brother in law Paul CHICOINE was
charged with his death. But as it turned out, a third man named Felix,
was ultimately convicted of murder, and Paul CHICOINE was exonerated.
And Paul ended up buying Antoine's share of Bellevue.
When the elder Pierre CHICOINE (xx Madeleine CHRETIEN) died, his half of
the seigneurie de Bellevue went to his children. The eldest son Pierre
CHICOINE (x Marie Anne BOUGAULT dit LACROIX) got 1/2 and his sibling,
including Paul, each received a share of the other 1/2.
This is how the BOUVIER children through their mother Marie Marguerite
CHICOINE, became part owner of the "fief" of which she had received 1/5
of the remaining 1/2. (Source: Registre II des foys et hommages pour les
fiefs du Canada (30 janvier 1723 au 5 juillet 1726), partie 1, f. 10-12).
Now look who got one of the other pieces:
Madeleine CHICOINE (sister to Pierre and Marie Marguerite) wife of Louis
GUERTIN (4th degree ancestors of your Marie Josephe BOUVIER.
If Joseph MARCOUX dit SAINT-ONGE is in fact the son of Marguerite
CHICOINE, he would probably have had a small piece of the original fief
de Bellevue to his name and it would have made perfect sense for him to
marry someone who also possessed another parcel of the same land...
Cheers,
Mona
