Hi Frances,

The DROUIN collection is a photographic record of the duplicate parish
records which, by law, had to be filed with the civil authority. In the
case of some parishes, because of fires, floods, riots, wars..., these
duplicate originals are the only documents that remain. If only because
of this, the DROUIN collection is an invaluable research tool.

In theory, both the parish registers and their duplicate are considered
originals. They are supposed to be filled out side by side, and signed
by all. But in practice, it often happened that the priest or his clerk
would only fill up the duplicate at the last minute just before having
to tend it over to the Bishop, and later on, to the District Court
House. So depending on how the records were kept, there can be more or
less discrepancies between the two.

No tool is ever perfect.
