Wondering about the name Janis dit Gouin. It was listed on Tanquay as a dit name. Has anyone else checked Kaskaskia, Illinois? I found it listed there. I believe it was a slave belonging to a Gouin. The slaves there could be Indian or black back in the middle 1700's. I have my line traced back to Sebastien (Jean Baptiste) Gouin dit Champagne who came over from France as a soldier. He married Feb 1, 1703 to Louise De Rainville in St Pierre de Sorel. Louise died in 1715 after having 8 children. The last 2 were twins born 1715. Both died within the year along with the mother. The 4 girls went to live with her brothers. The 2 boys left one was my ancestor Daniel who stayed in the area and married by 1735 to Marie Genevieve Le Valois. The father and the other son were both named Jean Baptiste. I found them in Kaskaskia, Illinois where they both married women by the same name Marie LaCroix! One was dated February 13, 1733 with the dit Champagne. The other married April 7, 1!
752. I figure one is the father and the other the son. Also a couple of Janis are listed on the marriage records. Has anyone else checked this area?
They were REALLY voyagers! They were really a long way from home.
