The ancestry.ca Ontario Vital Index 1857 - 1922 has errors and omissions as
does the index on microfim that was produced for the Archives of Ontario.
The following is helpful if the event happened between 1869-1922.

If you are using the searchable index on Ancestry.ca, and cannot locate your
person you seek, you can click on the "refine search" button, then scroll
down the page past the search tool. You will find each county in Ontario
listed. Click on the county of interest, then click on the year in which
you believe the event occurred.

That will take you to the beginning of the microfilm reel for that county in
that year. You can use the "next" button to move to the next image and so
on until you have viewed all of the registrations for that county in that
year.

It sounds like a bigger job than it is. The payoff is that there are many
cases where the entry can be found that way, but the person is not listed,
or they are listed incorrectly on the searchable index. I've personally
found three entries using this method, that could not be found in the index.

Also keep in mind that compliance to the "new" requirement to register vital
events in Ontario was ignored by a significant number of people until the
mid 1870's.

Happy hunting :)
