"Nicolas Roy, of St.-Remi of Dieppe, son of Louis LeRoy and Anne Lemaitre,
came to Canada in May 1662 on the ship "Le Jardin de Hollande." In the
region of Honfleur, Nicolas married Jeanne Lelievre, Daughter of Guillaume,
a native of St.-Leonard, which is near Honfleur, Calvados." (Olivier,
Reginald. "Your Ancient Canadian Family Ties." Ogden: 1972.)

The following appears in the First Census of New France (Quebec) of 1666
(District of Beaupre):

Nicolas LeRoy, 23, poigneure; Jeanne Liepvre, 26, sa femme; Louis LeRoy, 7,
fils; Nicolas LeRoy, 5, fils; Noël LeRoy, 3, fils; Marie Jeanne LeRoy, 16
mois, fille; Jean Briere, 24, boulanger domestiq. Engaige

"In May 1662, he boarded with his wife and their two children the "Le Jardin
de Hollande" accompanied by Anne Lemaitre, a widow. The Roys probably
followed her father Guillaume Lelievre who already left for Quebec in 1659.
On Nicolas' arrival he settled with his family in the seigneurie de Beaupre.
He obtained a concession from the widow of Guillaume Couillard, Mrs.
Guilemette Hebert. On August 1664 the Notary Duquette signed over two
arpents of land to Nicolas at Beaupre.

In the 1666 census it is mentioned Nicolas Roy,23 years; Jeanne Lelievre,26
his wife; Louis 7; Nicolas 5; Noël 3; Marie Jeanne, 16 months; Jean Briere,
24, butcher, domestic help.

In the 1667 census: Nicolas Roy, 23; Jeanne Lelievre his wife, Louis, 8;
Noele, 5; Marie, 4; Guillaume 2; 4 animals, 7 arpents in value, located at
Île de Orleans; Guillaume Lelievre 60; Jena Briere servan, 22; grandchild
Noel 4; 11 animals.

This farm on the Île d'Orleans did not belong to Guillaume Lelievre, but
leased from the Seigneurie Île d'Orleans Jacques Cailhaut de la Tesserie and
his wife Eleonore de Grandmaison in 1667. The lease contract was signed by
the Notary Gilles Rageot. Guillaume's lease agreement was to split the
profit of the farm with the owners. The lease was renewed 1673 with notary
Romaine Becquet; in 1675 the same arrangement was made with Olivier Morel de
la Duranttaye from the same Seigneurie with the same name at sud du St.
Laurent.

In 1663, a terrible crime happened to the family. Little Marie, at the
tender age of 4 1/2, was raped by a neighbour, Jacques Nourry. Nourry was
brought to justice and convicted 3 hours later. His sentence: death by
decapitation. A sum of 300 pounds was given to little Marie and all his
assets where given away. Marie got over the terrible crime and married at

#1265.)According to the notes of Fr. Eloi-Gerard Talbot, Nicolas Roy arrived
in Canada about May 1662 on the ship "Le Jardin de Hollande". Given this
fact, the oldest child, Noel, may have been born in France. No evidence of
the birth of Noel was found in the PRDH certificates as well as a
certificate for child Guillaume who appears at age 2 in the census of 1666
and age 5 in the census of 1667.

Demographic aspects of the 1702-1703 smallpox epidemic in the St-Lawrence
valley (p. 49-67)

Data compiled by the "Programme de recherche en démographie historique" of
the Université de Montréal were used to number and characterize deaths
within the population of European extraction from the 1702-1703 smallpox
epidemic in the St-Lawrence valley. Between 6% and 6.5% of the settled
population in the late fall of 1702 was eliminated by the disease; adding
the death of an extra 25% of newborns, the epidemic's toll reached some
1,300. A significant proportion of adults died among the Canadian-born
population, surpassing 10% for women of childbearing ages in particular.
This proves that contrary to what most observers have written, smallpox was
not prevalent among the non-native population during the 17th century.
