One of Scotland's most important religious personages died today in 597AD.
St Columba was actually Irish, but is best known for establishing the monastery
on the Hebridean island of Iona that exists there to this day. The island
became the most important religious site in Scotland for many years, with over
40 Scottish monarchs being buried there.
(I read a book on this Saint which was published in Scotland, very
interesting and entertaining, which may sound like an odd comment about a Saint, but
he did some amazing things.)
