Hi Alice:
There were more French married Native girls than other ethnic groups and
your statement is a common belief. The French were probably out here first
too and with the absence of woman, a native woman as a wife seemed logical.
Some very well-known Winnipeg families were definitely of Metis origin in
early Winnipeg. The Metis were not always treated kindly - were taken
advantage of in many ways. Those who had education had it better. History
shows that the ordinary person, regardless of religion or ethnic background
was often treated badly. Only those with wealth had an easy life in the
past.
