The place you are referring to may be Trois Rivières, northeast of Montreal. My
family went through there in 1954 and it was the smelliest town on our whole
trip because of the smokestacks.
BTW, the very worst water on that trip was in Hamilton, Ontario.
I am sure things don't smell/taste like that now!
