I am researching this line of my brother in law's, and I need more
information on siblings, spouses, and spouses' ancestry, as well as any
information on who the people were. I'd appreciate any information about
them anyone has to share or can look up.

I was told by a Renaud researcher that he might have seen my Renaud in a set
of books called Our French Canadian Ancestors, if someone could possibly do
a lookup.

In the mid 19th century Jean Baptiste Renaud moved his family to
Southbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts, where he and his family worked
in textile mills and paint and boot factories and eventually an optical
factory. I am wonderning why after generations of apparently successful
farming on land awarded by the French king, he moved so far south for
miserable low paying industrial jobs. There was a French Canadian enclave
in Southbridge, adn apparently they all worked at miserable low paying
textile jobs.

1. Jean1 Renaud dit Locas. He married abt 1640 in Languedoc, France Marie
Laurence.

Children of Jean Renaud dit Locas and Marie Laurence were as follows:
+ 2 i Pierre-Andre2 Renaud dit Locas, born in Leucatte near Narbonne
Languedoc, France; died 25 Jan 1713; buried 26 Jan 1713 in Grondines,
Quebec. He married M.-Francoise Desportes.

Generation 2

2. Pierre-Andre2 RENAUD DIT LOCAS (Jean1), born in Leucatte near Narbonne
Languedoc, France; died 25 Jan 1713; buried 26 Jan 1713 in Grondines,
Quebec. He married on 5 Nov 1669 M.-Francoise DESPORTES.

Notes for Pierre-Andre Renaud dit Locas
Arrived in 1665 Aug 17 memories SGCF XIII #1 soldier Carignan-Salieres
regiment.

From Pierre Renaud, e-mail (information on this line is also from him)

Pierre-André Renaud took the name Locat by distortion (bad _pronunciation)
of the name of the locality he was originated, Leucate, a _Mediterranean sea
port about halfway between Narbonne and Perpignan.__The form of the name:
Renaud _dit_ Locat is equivalent to Renaud _said_ _(AKA) Locat.__The name
Leucate varied from Leaucat (1709) to Laucatte (1753) and _Locquat as used
in Pierre-André's marriage contract (1669). Leucate _became Locat, then
Locas, then Lacas. I have seen Laucas too (au = o in _French). Pierre-André
was a soldier and it was general practice among _soldiers to take a
nickname, sometimes their place of origin, a _geographic feature, a
trade.__Pierre-André was a soldier in the Carignan-Salières regiment,
_Granfontaine company. This regiment was sent from France in 1665 _specially
to tame the Iroquois Indians who were raiding the French _colony in the
St-Laurent valley. After a succesfull campaign the _soldiers and officers
were offered land if they wished to stay in the _colony. This was to
increase the occupation of the territory quite a bit _and provide military
protection through the militia.__Usually the officers were granted a large
piece of land (seigneury or _fief) that they could divide into lots of 20 X
3 to 30 by 4 arpents _(about 45 to 90 acres) or more depending on the
localization, quality of _soil, etc. Many soldiers followed their officers
in the venture and _established on those lots.

Their son Pierre was traveling for fur trade (voyageur) and married in
_1739 in Michilimakinac, now in Michigan, and lived in Illinois where he
_had is family and married again in 1773.__Most of other descendants
established in Montreal area and a few _migrated to the USA.__That is the
story about Pierre-André Renaud dit Locat.

MARRIAGE:
Notaire of marriage contract: Becquet R. (Sillery)

Notes for M.-Francoise Desportes
Note about pupil of the king - I don't know if that refers to the name, or
what.

There had always been a shortage of girls in the colony, so from 1663 to
_1673 there was a royal program to encourage young women to emigrate to
_Canada, get married there and increase the population. There were called
_"pupils of the King" and were granted a gift of 50 to 150 pounds when _they
married. About 770 women migrated to that effect and most of them _married
(about 5% did not).__Françoise Desportes, daughter of deceased Jean
Desportes and of Isabelle _Degibruse, from Paris, France, was born about
1652 and arrived in the _New World in 1669, bringing 200 pounds of goods
along with a gift of 50 _pounds from the King. She married Pierre-André,
probably in Grondines, _after filing a marriage contract in Sillery, near
Quebec, before R. _Becquet, notary of the King. She died April 12th, 1736.
Pierre-André and _Françoise had 18 children, all married.

fur trade (voyageur) and married in _1739 in Michilimakinac, now in

_migrated to the USA.__That is the story about Pierre-André Renaud dit

Canadian Catholic and Southbridge bmd records as well as teh US census to
trace teh family. Her husband is descended from one of Angele's brothers.
She also used Pierre Renaud's records. I e-mailed him but have not yet
heard back. She is supposed to send me her 40+ page file.

Gatineau, Framingham, MA: Lakeview Press, 1919_It mentions the following
French-Canadian arrivals in Southbridge: 1857, J. B. Renaud from St.
