Started in 2001, the new "Grande Bibliothque" (it is the name) of Montreal
will open next week-end when twenty to thirty thousand visitors are expected
to visit the new library located at 475 east Maisonneuve boulevard, in
Montreal. I can`t wait to get there!
Some figures:
Cost is 97 millions$, 33,000 m2 on 6 levels, 6,000 green pane glasses coated
with ceramic, the interior was built mostly with birch, 3 elevators with
panoramic view, 20,000 hours to place the books on the shelves, 400
employees, 1.2 millions books, 1.2 millions others (newspapers, magazines,
CD, videos) 1.6 millions microfilms (yeah!...), 400 flat screen computers
hooked on Internet, 1300 comfortable armchairs for reading, 2 auditoriums: 1
of 80 seats for children, 1 of 300 seats for cultural events.
