My mom had polio in the 1930's. She was the second youngest of 14
children with two babies having died in the flu pandemic of 1918. All
the kids were sent to live with friends and family for fear that they,
too, would contract the disease. Daily grandma would anoint her with
holy water and the prayers never stopped. Her funeral was planned. A
child in a neighboring town, who also had polio, recovered. The doctor
made a serum from this young child and injected it into my mom. She
recovered. Whether it was this doctor's good knowledge for his time
(we're talking about a very small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula,
far from cities) or my grandparents faith that cured my mom, we don't
know for certain. Some said it was a miracle. She never had any after
effects.
