Subject: [Q-R] 20th Century Plague In Ogdensburg New York
I was born in 1947 - but do not remember but a few facts when it came to
the ( polio vaccine ) I was not allowed to get it . Once in Jr. High
School, OFA Ogdensburg NY - I saw many who were crippled by this
affliction. They made their ways threw the hall’s dragging their leg ‘s
in heavy metal cast’s . They missed many days of school and were shunned
upon by other students . I especially remember one girl by the name of
Marie , who was Mohawk Indian . She was a beautiful child, and had one
cast on left leg. I made friends with Marie - and she lived on ( Lake
Street ) . We had many good times- even though she could not swim with
me, she could not run with me, and she was not excepted by my friends
We bonded and it lasted till one day I went to her house , and they were
gone. And I never saw Marie again. But, I remember her gentle ways , and
the books we shared , and the stories of her Mohawk life in St. Regis.
One time , I went with her & her family to Hogansburg to visit her
Grandmother - who lived in an old house - on a farm. She was a very dark
lady - with white hair . And she greeted Marie in Indian Language. She
hugged me- and thanked me for being a friend to Marie . Being a child at
the time, I wondered why she would thank me for being Marie’s friend.
The reason latter became obvious as the child I was - soon learned about
( segregation ) towards those that had illness or were Indian. Latter
one of the boy’s in my class ended up in an ( Iron Lung ) and then he
passed away . So many in St. Lawrence County caught Polio , so many
children & adults. I often wonder about these times. And the sorrow
attached to so many lives with this affliction.
