politician, born on this day at Glasgow, Scotland in 1815, the son of Hugh
Macdonald and Helen Shaw; died in Ottawa June 6, 1891, Ontario in 1938.
Macdonald moved to Kingston, Ontario with his parents at the age of five. He was to
become the first Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada (1867-73,
1878-91). (His birth is marked on this day; in actual fact, he was born late on the
