It' funny that you bring this up, as until recently I hadn't given much
thought about the African Americans going up to Canada and when they
started. But I just received a copy of the page from the records of St.
Gabriels Presbyterian Chuch in Montreal for my ancestors Etienne Villmer and
Marie Robinson in 1800. The marriage before it was as follows:

Alexander Smith a Negroe man & Catherine Fletcher a Negroe woman both of
Montreal after publication of Banns were married this fifthe day of Octr in
the year of our Loard one thousand Eight hundrethe by Jo. Young mst. The
parties declared they did not know how to sign their names. In the presense
of _____.

You wonder is they had escaped as Slaves, or what their story was.

Just thought I would share this story, also incase anyone might be
researching this line, this might help.
