Dresden Ontario - Josiah Henson 1789-1883 arrives in Upper Canada from
Maryland with his wife (in the picture) and four children on the Underground
Railway. The escaped American slave becomes pastor of a local church and starts a
technical school. He is the model for the hero of Harriet Beecher Stowe's
famous novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, the book that Abraham Lincoln said started the
US Civil War.
