" Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher (probably her
husband............).
Though she invented the dishwasher, Josephine never washed dishes herself. A
wealthy woman of the 1890s, she invented the machine because she was tired of
servants breaking her valuable china as they washed it. One afternoon,
Cochrane went out into the woodshed alongside her house and began building wire
compartments that would hold her dishes. She set these in a large copper
boiler, and attached a motor to pump the water and rotate the dishes. Her friends
persuaded her to patent it, in 1893 one of her machines won top prize at the
Chicago Worlds Fair."
