Knock On Wood.

Knocking on wood to ward off bad fortune has its roots in...
trees. The practice has its origins in the animistic belief
that trees contain living spirits. In this case, rapping on
the trunk of a tree was thought to keep the evil spirits
lurking within from escaping to ruin good luck—which is a
kinder, gentler way of keeping life going your way than
attaching a severed rabbit's foot to your key chain!
