"Patriots who became prisoners during the American Revolution found that the
British did not have the luxury of space in which to imprison them, and they
might be housed under very cramped conditions onboard a disabled ship.
Although, no prisoner on either side enjoyed luxurious conditions, the prison
hulks, as the disabled ships were called, were the worst of a bad lot, so bad that
many called them the "gateway to hell."
