While in England, I remember watching a TV series on Shakespeare. It stated
that there was no proof that Shakespeare was born in the much touted
"Shakespeare Birthplace" in Stratford. I visited the shrine a couple of
weeks, and on pressing the tour guide, she admitted, "Yes, there is no proof
that he was born here." Now, is there proof he wrote his plays? That's
rhetorical; don't respond to the question;-)
