"Henry Hudson is rightfully remembered for exploring the Hudson River, but
he did not discover the river, the strait, or bay that bear his name. The
river, discovered eighty-five years earlier by Giovanni da Verrazano, did not even
seem to interest Hudson. When he realized it was not part of the fabled
Northwest Passage, he promptly turned around at Albany and abandoned his
exploration.
His chief association with the bay is that he apparently died there under
unpleasant circumstances. Autocratic and suspicious, he was left there after
his crew revolted against him."
