"John Winslow, born in 1702 in Massachusetts, played a large part in the
deportation of the Acadians in 1755. He is mostly remembered for his
proclamation to the Acadian population, herded into St. Charles church at Grand Pre, when
the actual deportation began and he presented the with which terms the
British were to carry it out. The Acadians failed to grasp the true intent of
Lieutenant Governor Lawrence's words as read to them by Winslow. Winslow died
sixteen years later in Marshfield, Massachusetts."
