"The most flamboyant woman Loyalist was probably Flora McDonald. She seems
at first glance a most unlikely person to take the British side. Thirty
years
earlier, in her native Scotland, she had participated in a revolt against
England. She was at the Battle of Culloden and was responsible for saving
the life
of Bonnie Prince Charlie. As a result of this activity Flora McDonald was
imprisoned by the British in the Tower of London. After her release, she and
her
husband, like other undesirable Highlanders, emigrated to the colony of
North
Carolina. After the Battle of Culloden, the defeated Scottish rebels had to
take an oath of allegiance to the English King. Because they gave their
oath,
they remained loyal. The North Carolina Scots would not support the
Patriots.
The Patriots would not tolerate their remaining neutral. Flora road house to
house with her husband recruiting a Loyalist force and addressed them in
Gaelic.
The Loyalist force was defeated at the Battle of Moores Creek. Flora and
her children took passage to Scotland as her husband was imprisoned. She
reached
Scotland and never returned to America."
