"Greenland was originally a free state, without any constitution dependence
on either Iceland or Norway. Greenlanders had their own laws, their
independent Althing, and their own law speaker in occupied no mans land. In 1261
Greenland voluntarily accepted the rule of Norway, and under the Norwegian king
Hakon Hakonson the country became part of the realm of Norway. This included
Norway with the Kola peninsula, Iceland, Orkney and Shetland, the Hebrides, the
Faeroes and the Isle of Man. On the occasion the kings assumption of power in
Greenland, the scald Sturla Thordason wrote these verses............
Towards the north your mind was bent
Your sway to wax over land so cold
Good men find in this
King under the Pole Star
No chieftain has ere now
Ruled over so mighty a land
Radiant blazes your power
Further north than a sun may shine"
