"Once a colonial American couple married, they were encouraged to move
immediately into a new home of their own. Frequently the bridegrooms father had to
promise to help the couple find new accommodations as a condition of
marriage. About the only time two generations lived together in the colonial era was
when the elders became so old they couldn't care for themselves. The pattern
continued into the twentieth century, even among European immigrants.
The couples of colonial America usually married in their mid to late
twenties."
