........" You probably thought Columbus discovered the Americas, nope, it was
some red haired guy named Sven or Leif the Scandlenavian a Viking. Besides
founding the Americas, he started a pretty good football team the Vikings. But
back in those days when they hit the grid iron, they meant it, battle axes and
steel shields and helmets with horns...........none of this present day crap
of padding and referees.................and instant play backs.
Actually, Leif was son of Eric the Red or Burgundy, history isn't
quite sure on that. But why was he red? Well, once when Eric was in battle
with a group of Massachusetts Puritans, he let his shield down, and what the
Puritans did, well.......we cant go into that on here...........but he was red
ever after.
On Leif's second voyage he ran into this Italian guy name Chris.
Chris, try as he may, offered Leif pasta but Leif wouldn't hear of it. There
was no friendship between the two explorers. Leif told him to go up a stream
without paddles. So, Chris took off sailing his beloved ship the " Santa Anna" ,
right up the Mohawk River in New York State where he found a town called
Rome. Thinking, gee, this ain't such a bad spot, named just like the old country.
But getting back to Leif, what to do and where to go? This bothered
him a great deal. He remembers all to well, he has little Vikings at home to
support. "I have to do something real important now for historians to remember
me in the future or this will have been done in vain". I'll head north,
thinking one day and discover more new land. And so he did, and it was good as he
found a land full of maple trees and Inuits and some Newfies. But how will they
remember me?, he thought. They talk funny up here eh ! he thought. He ran
into a man named Cartier and introduced himself, Hi Jacques, I'm Leif. Leaf you
say , said Jacques, no Leif, as in Vikings. Ok Leaf, so, what's up? I'm in a
bad way said Leif, I need something to be remembered by. Hmmmmmm said Jacques,
what have you found since you've been in our cold country? Beautiful maple
trees, Leif said. Jacques thought for a while, a grand idea has come to me, there
Leaf old man. Leif, Leif not Leaf you French rascal you. We need a flag for
this country as your name is Leaf , we will put a Leaf on the flag, in honour
of you. Now Leif's horns began to sag..................my father was Eric the
Red, now I am Leaf the Red".................... :(
