Hi Kevan:
When I have looked at old handwriting - some of which is full of flourishes
and others barely discernible - I usually squint, twisting my head this way
and that. So with a bit of imagination here I can see how "Athanase" could
easily look like "Thomas" and perhaps that is what an original transcriber
did as well.
