ROLAND FORTIN - Somerset
ROLAND FORTIN, 90, of Owen Avenue, a construction superintendent, died
yesterday at Highlander Nursing Home, Fall River.
He was the husband of the late Elizabeth L. (Cote) Fortin. Born in Fall
River, a son of the late Alfred and Mary Louise (Nolet) Fortin, he was a
lifelong resident of Somerset.
Mr. Fortin was a field superintendent for the Gamino Construction Co., and
had supervised building the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier in Providence, and
many overpasses and bridges in the area.
He had been a member of the merchant marine for two years before joining the
Army, and later returned to the merchant marine, attending officer-training
school in New London, Conn., retiring in 1945 as a lieutenant junior grade
after World War II.
Mr. Fortin was a former member of Fall River Lodge of Elks, and the Loyal
Order of Moose, Fall River Lodge, and a member of Carpenters Local 1305,
He was a parishioner of St. Louis De France Church, and a member of the
Sacred Heart Society.
He leaves a son, Richard Fortin of Brookline, Mass.; twin daughters,
Paulette Spadaro of North Attleboro and Pauline Pemberton of Somerset; two
foster brothers, Joseph Fortin of Warren and James Kanachewicz of Pahrump,
Nev.; and three grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was the brother of
the late Leo, Wilfred, Omer and Henry Fortin, Blanche Gardiner Soares, Irene
Audet and Ida Fortin.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from Hathaway Community Home for
Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St.
Louis De France Church, Buffinton Street, Swansea. Burial will follow in
Notre Dame Cemetery.
