«Canonical impedimient of consanguinity in a prohibited degree, from which
the spouses received dispensation by Messire Montgolfier»

«Dispensation from double relationships of consanguinity in the the third
abd the fourth degree»

Short course in Canon Law:

Consanguinity

1. Consanguinity is a relationship between family members based on common
blood lines. It exists in the direct line if one person is the ancestor of
the other; in the indirect line (collateral) if neither is the ancestor of
the other, but both are descended from a common ancestor.

2. The relationship consitutes a diriment (prohibitive) impediment to
marriage in all degrees of the direct line, and up to the third degree
inclusive in the collateral line, according to the current Code of Canon Law.
Before the 1917 Code, that is, during the colonial period in North America
and during the 19th century, the impediment also included the fourth degree
of the collateral line.

3. Before the 1917 Code, the impediment was multiplied not only when the two
parties were descended from more than one independent common ancestor, but
also when they were descended from the same common ancestor by distinct lines
of descent.
