HI Nancy,
Just by looking at your e-mail I have the feeling that your Duff is from the British Isles, while the oldest ancestor of my Duffs originated in Germany, with the name Thofft which became Duff in Quebec. The Quebec desc. appear to have all married French Canadian, so most of my (husband) Duff ancestors are known as being French-Canadian.
Maybe we do not have a connection after all. Too bad.
Adele

Just a short note to the two of you. Pennie Redmile sent me some of your emails off another list as she thought I'd be interested. I've literally just started looking at Duffs as two months ago I finally discovered the parentage of my great-grandfather Robert Patrick. His grandparents were Thomas Patrick and Margaret Thompson Duff. As far as I can figure out - I'm still working on piecing everything together - Thomas and Margaret stayed in the Melbourne area, while one of their sons, William Patrick who married Sarah Weed, moved over to North Ely in Shefford County ... who eventually had my great-grandfather Robert. I've been picking Duffs out of my reference material as I've gone along looking for Patricks (cemetery recordings, extracts from parish registers, etc.), but haven't put it together yet. I was hoping to get it typed up into better notes than my scribble as I was going to share the info with my two Patrick cousins who are working on this with me. Some of the Duf!
fs are further down in the Ulverton and L'Avenir area. (I grew up in South Durham, by the way.) And one of these Patrick cousins - Wendy - her mother is Marion Riff; her parents lived yards away from my grandparents (Urban Massey and Mae Patrick) in Ulverton in the old parsonage that was converted to a house; Marion's Dad sold antiques. I was so darn excited to get this email from Pennie because Duff info seems to be few and far between, I thought I'd never find out anything about them and figure out how they connect with Margaret.

There's also a Rev. Prof. Duff that keeps being mentioned - do you know about him?

By the way, in Pennie's email to you, she mentioned that she had sent me the list of all the Duff entries in the Lower Canada Land Papers. I haven't got her envelope in the mail yet; I think she just sent it on Thursday to me so it will take a few days to get from Quebec out to Calgary ... Canada Post seems to be very slow on that route! Or maybe I'm always just too impatient when I know something is coming in the mail. :-)

Look forward to hearing from you.
