Subject: [Q-R] Engage

Hello Everyone

Can anyone tell me what an "engage" is as an occupation ?

Also, I found my ancestor , Jean Connor, working with Michel Curot in
1803 on the Yellow River for the XY Company. In his journal, Curot says " I
sent Connor and Boisert somewhere" and "I gave Connor material for shoes" and
"Connor was sick and too weak to carry". So Curot is the boss. Now what is
Connor ? Is he a fur trader or a voyager ? He and Boisert seemed to work
together a lot fetching furs for Curot. Was Curot the one who held the fur
trading license ? Were Boisert and Connor clerks ?
Does anyone have access to Curot's journal which was included in vol 20
of the Midwest Pioneers by the Minnesota Historical Society ? I just read
the parts on Ancestry. There is a part in the journal that refers to Connor
being taken captive and there is also a sketch of him. My local library is
having trouble locating a copy. If anyone has access to this volumne and
could copy the picture and the info on Connor's capture, I would much
appreciate it.

Sue
