I have found a 1852 burial record from Christ Church Cathederal (Montreal,
Anglican) and noticed that the witnesses who signed the record were the
same ones who signed another burial record for a different person on the
same page. I would have thought that family or friends would have been the
witnesses.

Is there anyone who may know, or have an opinion as to why apparent
strangers would have been the witnesses?
