Hi Rick. Re the references to Geoffrey Donoghue in Kerry, I've already
checked them out, but didn't see any with a daughter Johanna in the right
time frame.

I don't know Johanna's mother's name unfortunately, nor do I know anything
about her siblings, if she had any.

I knew about Daniel, which was the clue I needed to find the cemetery where
Johanna and Michael were buried. According to a passport application,
Michael's father was named John.

I don't know if she emigrated by herself or with family - I haven't been
able to find a definitive passenger listing for her.

Kidd is a good suggestion - is that a common Irish name?

Thanks for the help!

Leslie

Hey Leslie
I see a fair number of references to Jeffrey/Geoffrey Donnoghues in
County Kerry in the 1800s. You didn't list the first name of Johanna's
mother. In the 1900 census, I see that Johanna named her 1st daughter
Ellen. It was common practice for Irish couples to name the 1st
daughter after the mother's mother.

Looks like Michael & Johanna lost their 1st son Daniel in 1885, age 3.
Was Michael's father a Daniel ?

Do you know of Johanna's siblings and their vital dates ?

Did she emigrate by herself or with family ?

Possible maiden name for Jo's mother .......Kidd ?

Hope this helps

I am searching for my great grandmother, Johanna Mary Donoghue Kearney. She
emigrated from Kerry in 1871, married Michael L, Kearney September 28, 1880,
but can find no record of her in the 1880 census. She does show up as
Johanna Kearney in 1900 and 1910. Her father Goodfriede (Geoffrey) was one
of the sponsors at her wedding, but can't find him either. Geoffrey seems
to be an unusual name for an Irishman but he remains elusive - no sightings
in Ireland or Philadelphia. Johanna and Michael's wedding took place at St.
Teresa's Church, which is now closed and St. Rita's holds the records. The
secretary at St. Rita's (who was very helpful, by the way) added that
Johanna's mother's maiden name was listed as "Hidd" or something close to
it.I'm guessing maybe Dodd or Wood(s). Any other ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Leslie
