Thank you Betty, Kassie, and Vince. I am still not sure about this PO of A. I
should have mentioned that the obituary was that of a woman, and in 1944. Can
a woman be a member of the Patriotic Order of the Sons of America, or only
men? Could she be a member if her husband or son had been a member? Hmm, the
obit doesn't actually say she is a member, just that they were invited. If
her son was an active member, they might invite them to his mother's funeral
I guess. Her husband (my great-grandfather's brother) predeceased her by 8
years, and no mention of that organization was made in his obituary. Her
parents were irish immigrants I believe, but her husband's family (my family)
was here since pre-revolutionary times although I don't have it all traced
out. If it turns out that this was the correct organization it could be a
really important find as I imagine that they had to submit genealgical
information.
Maybe I can call some libraries and find out more. If anyone has any other
ideas, please let me know!
