Yep. My dad and his three sibs wound up under the care of the Catholic
Children's Bureau.

My grandmother pulled up with a cab with the four kids in a cab where my
grandfather was visiting his mother, left the kids with him, got into the cab
and no one ever heard from or saw her again (major brick wall for me). This
was West Philly, late 1920s or early 1930s.

My granddad was a hemophiliac and had to work but couldn't take care of four
little kids (under ten years of age) so he placed them with the Catholic
Children's Bureau.

What I can't figure out is that he had seven living siblings at the time and
not one of them volunteered to help out? Then again, they could have had a
lot of kids to care for themselves and couldn't afford to support a niece or
nephew, too. I heard my great-grandmother was not happy that he placed them
with the Bureau.
