Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] re: 1870 Census

I finally received the 1880 census out here in California that I had ordered
months ago on microfilm...I learned almost nothing new from it; in fact, I
learned much more from the Soundex.
My question: in trying to figure out when my ancestor emigrated, I am going
to go back to the 1870 census. However, when I was trying to do a search in
the reference department of the local library for the soundex, it doesn't
look like there was a soundex for that year. 1) Was there a Soundex for
1870? 2) Was the census figured out more than once that year? It looks
like there are two different times...Which one should I get? 3) For this
year, do I need the ward number? Is this based on the address of the person
at the time?
Sorry for all the questions, but being so far away, it is always hard to
figure all this information out...Thanks, Arlene in California
