Jane, you are correct that civil registration of Vital Statistics was not
required until 1860, even then it was sporadic to say the least. I found one
Catholic Church in West Phila. that may fit your description. St. Agatha/St.
James (they consolidated in 1976) is located at 38th & Chestnut. You would
ask for records from St. James (opened in 1850), give them a phone call at
215-386-9732 or 33 and ask for the info.
