Subject: [PHILLY-ROOTS-L] Upcoming Trip to Philadelphia
Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 09:33:27 -0700

We are going to be in Philadelphia for 4 or 5 days in the latter part of
July.

In a past trip, we visited the Historical Society of PA, the Chester County
Historical Society, Swarthmore College, Montgomery County Historical
Society.

At this point we are looking for information about lands that might have
been confiscated from Loyalist during the REV. WAR.
We are still trying to find the parents and siblings of AMOS ROOKE. He
served for a very brief time in the PA LINE, then his father bought him out
of the service. So we know his father was alive about 1776. We think they
left the Philadelphia area and went up to Staten Island because they were
Loyalists. In Moravian church records on Staten Island, Amos claims he was
raised a Quaker. Amos is found in Staten Island in 1779 marrying Martha
Mersereau in the Moravian Church. We also now know he was given a land grant
in Nova Scotia and went up there for possibly 5 years then returned to
Staten Island for the rest of his life.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions where else we might look for
information while we are in Philadelphia? I have seen something about the
Free Library. What is there? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks so much!
