Sandy
I can tell you this much about the William Penn Statue. Our family
oral history says that the guy who drove it there was my great
grandfather, Anders Sorensen, using a 16 horse team from the Tacony
Iron and Metal works, in April 1893. It weighed 53,000 pounds, was 37
feet tall and was hauled in 14 sections. Anders was a former farmer
from Denmark who was used to hauling. He used to show his
grandchildren how he held all of the reins intertwined in his fingers
to control the 16 horses as they pulled the dray over the cobblestone
streets. Anders was later a rigger for the Budd Mfg Co on Hunting
Park Ave.
