My records are as follows:-
1841 sees William Atherley Phillips at home in Brecon with father George, mother Mary and older sister Ann.
1851 William was at Trinity College Camarthan training to be a schoolmaster. Ma, Pa & sis were in Brecon - census shows Mary born in Duffield, Derbyshire, and Ann in Shoreditch. Was able to find both Derbyshire marriage to Mary Atherley in 1811, and birth of Ann in 1819 on IGI.
!861 sees George, now a widower, living with daughter Ann, now married to Thomas Price. George died in 1863 in Brecon.

George's occupation in 1851 says 'shoemaker journeyman' - thus the reason for a marriage and birth so far from Brecon.

Does this throw any light on my family??

I think I am more interested in George and his ancestors.  Since
George was a shoe maker, can I assume his father was also?  Fathers
trained their sons in their trades.  I think that was the point I was
trying to make.  Have you gone further back than George with your
family tree?  I have mine back to 1600s and for two hundred years all
the Phillips men were shoemakers.  I would guess if I could go further
back, I would still find them as shoemakers and maybe connect to your
George's ancestors.
