Hi Matt,

Re-reading your email again, it sounds as though you don’t have a copy of
Esther’s marriage certificate yet.

Given that you have the reference details for it (Marriages Q1 1932, Wigan,
Vol 8c Page 205 - from Ancestry), you can order a copy of the certificate
(eg. £7 from www.gro.gov.uk).

Her marriage certificate should reveal her age, occupation, marital status,
her residence at the time, and most importantly her father’s name and
occupation, which is what you’d need to help trace her and her family in the
censuses.  Witnesses names may also provide some clues to the right family.

Once you have found her family in the most recent census (or the 1901 census
if she was born before 31 March 1901), you can work backwards to each
preceding census.  Try the 1911 census at www.1911census.co.uk as there are
a few matches on the free index, depending on where she was born and where
she lived at the time.  If you get the marriage certificate and need help
finding her in the census, just post the details back to this list and I'm
sure you'll get some fast results!

A newspaper marriage notice might also give family information, if you can
find the relevant newspaper online.

Best of luck!

Cheers
Louise

Hello,
I am looking for any details of my paternal grandmother - Esther
Phillips. I've traced other branches of my tree back to the early
1800's, but I've drawn nothing but blanks on Esther.

What I know:

- Born about 1900
- Married first quarter 1932 to Daniel Fletcher in Wigan & Leigh
District, Register Office or Registrar Attended
- Lived at Six Acre(s) Farm, Hindley Green, Wigan, Lancashire (now
Greater Manchester) in 1938
- Had 8 children (maybe more with infant deaths) - James, Doreen,
Barbara, Brian, William (Billy), Ron(ald?), Lilian, Sarah (Sally)
- Died about 1970
- Heard a story once about her working on Blackburn Bus Station as a
newspaper seller. Apparently she used to have a monkey that would sit
on her shoulder whilst she worked (yes, a real monkey!)

My father (James) was sent to Kirkham Children's Home at an early age,
so he never knew much about his parents to be able to pass onto me. So
if anyone can help me find anything else about her, I'd would be so
grateful.

Best wishes, Matt
