Herman must have been living or working on and off in Canada even earlier than the birth of your grandfather. He appears to be living in Saskatchewan Canada at the time of his WWI Draft registration. He lists his birthplace as Bukovina, United States of America. Hard to read his draft registration. Does appear to say medium height and build, with brown eyes and black hair. Occupation is farmer. Birthdate matches - 12/8/1891. There is more info on the draft registration, but I can't read it.
