Hello Janet,
I was born and raised at 62nd and Hazel, a stone's throw from your address.
The neighborhood is known as Cobb's Creek today. I was the fourth
generation in the neighborhood. It was always West End, a tight little
section of West Philadelphia. It is Ward 46. St. Carthage was the Catholic
Church, location 63rd and Cedar Ave. St. George was the Episcopal Church,
location 61st and Hazel Ave. There was a synagogue at 63rd and Larchwood.
We were truly a melting pot!
Now, the good part for you! Ward 46 ED 51-516 page 190 sheet 13A shows:
George Hutton, age 38 owns, occ. acct., wife Rachel age 39, dau Peggy.
A couple of pages along shows 6111 Catharine Street with Roy Keiser,
minister, Methodist Church and wife Margaret. The church was/is on the 700
block S. 61st Street, between Catharine St. and Walton Ave. My guess is the
parsonage was 6111 Catharine St. I can still picture the church. It was set
back from the street.
Regards,
Mary McCanney Finley
