Ken,
As you well know, I've been through my share of helth issues ( still am, I
have surgery March 7th). Where there is a will, there is a way, keep that
faith. I also went through my ordeal with disability and I'm not sure if we
talked about it or not BUT, what helped me was I contacted the congressman
here in MS. Explained how long I'd been waiting and such and they flagged my
file as the congressman taking a personal interest in my case. After that, I
checked in with the woman in his office that was taking care of it about
once a month and it only took a few months after he looked into it for me to
get some results.
I don't know how it works there but here there are programs at some of the
hospitals that will help you. My old neighbor used to go through some
program at Methodist hospital in Memphis and they took her in without
insurance because she had cancer. I do know that at the MED in Memphis, they
can't turn you away with life threatening problems because they are state
funded. My uncle went to Byhalia Family Medical here in Byhalia, MS and
they told him he was having a heart attack even though he had no signs, he
was just trying to get them to take care of the pain he'd had in his legs
for several months. They sent him to Baptist DeSoto and they did open heart
surgery the next day and he had no insurance, he was waiting to be approved
for disability. While in there, a social worker came in to talk to him and
he told her he had no idea how he was going to pay and she told him that is
what she was there for. She did the paperwork and filed and got his SSI
going to carry him until his disability came through and got him on
medicaid as a disability pending patient and medicaid can go retro for 3
months and covered it all. Not meaning to babble but, just letting you
know, hang in there. Don't give up. If I gave up everytime they told me I
was on borrowed time, I'd never have met any of you wonderful people. If
there is anything I can do, let me know. As I said, I have a major surgery
on the 7th and will be down for a while but after that, heck, I'd be happy
to help you dig around and see what we can find for you. You're FAMILY and
that is what family is for.
Suzie
