You might have a person with more names. For almost 20 years I looked for my Great grandfather, Louis Bueltemann, I finally found him. His birth name was Karl Heinrich Louis Bueltemann. It ended up to be that I had to go by his birthday and not his name when it came to finding him in Germany.

Thanks for all the information. It helps us all doing Pa-Germany research.
I have a Grandpa Adam Conrad living in Pittsburgh Pa from about 1827 on. He was born in Stuttgart area. We cannot find him so our first guess is that he is using the greman naming form and Adam is his second name. Johann is a family name so it might be the first name for him. Alam is also a name in the male family line. He had a sister Elizabeth with him in Pitts by 1890s.
Where do you suggest I look for Ship/Immigration records and for birth records in his town? Are there now master lists for german documents like we have in the USA?
