Dear Sandra,
I offer the following information about Paddock in response to your message of 28 Oct 05.
Valerie Paddock's birth is recorded in the national birth index as Valerie J. Paddock March Quarter 1930 Birmingham South 6d 297, with her mother’s maiden name given as Hastilow.
The birthplace of Edward Paddock (bap 13 Apr 1856 Westbury) given as Shelton in the 1891 census on-line index, should read Stretton (short for Stoney Stretton in the parish of Westbury). Shelton is a township in the parish of Shrewsbury St Chad that became a parish in its own right in 1855 (Shelton and Oxon). Coincidentally, there was a Paddock family in Shelton, but they were from a different line.
Thomas Paddock b. Kinnerley c. 1858 may be listed as age 2 in the 1861 census on-line index, but in the original return his age looks more like 21 (ie b. c. 1839/40). Kinnerley is not in Westbury, but is a parish in its own right. It is possible that Thomas Paddock (baptised 1839 Westbury – see below) was born in the parish of Kinnerley, in which case he may have been recorded twice in the 1861 census (once as a lodger with his parents and once as a lodger at his place of work). Otherwise, it is highly unlikely that Thomas b. Kinnerley was a son of Robert Paddock.
Thomas Paddock (baptised 26 May 1839 Westbury) was Robert Paddock's son by his first marriage (to Elizabeth Bright on 31 May 1838 at Shrewsbury St Chad). There was another son, William (b. 1841), but I think he may have died young. Elizabeth died in 1842. Thomas is listed as living at Hanwood in the 1861 census as a 21 year old lodger. He married and settled at Hanwood, where he had at least one son (Thomas Robert Paddock, b. 1862).
Charlotte was Robert's second wife. Her maiden name was Colley and the couple married on 27 Dec 1849 at Welshpool. Robert died on 9 Dec 1902 and Charlotte on 14 Mar 1905 - both at Minsterley. They had two other children born at Pontesbury: Sarah (1860) and James (1862).
Noting that Paddock is a derivative of Parrock (at least in Shropshire) and that the geographical area concerned is best viewed as extending from N.W. Shropshire into adjacent parts of Wales (Denbighshire, Flintshire and Montgomeryshire), Robert’s direct line of descent can be traced as follows:
Thomas Parrock / Paddock, bap 23 Sep 1781 West Felton; bur 29 Apr 1824 Llanymynech; mar Mary France (aka Francis) 11 Apr 1809 Alberbury.
Edward Parrock / Paddock, bap. 2 Dec 1744 West Felton; bur 25 Mar 1819
Llanymynech; mar (1) Mary Birch (23 Oct 1772 Knockin) - Thomas' mother; mar (2) Elizabeth Humphreys (11 Jan 1788 Llanymynech).
Edward Parrock / Paddock, bap 29 Dec 1713 West Felton; bur 11 Jul 1757 West
Felton; mar Martha Edwards (3 Dec 1739 West Felton).
Vespatian Parrock, (no bap located); bur 15 Dec 1750 West Felton; mar Lydia Thompson (17 Feb 1713 West Felton).
Probably son of Vespatian Parrock, bap 7 Jun 1640 West Felton; bur 5 May 1718 West Felton; mar Elinor Moare (10 Oct 1682 Ruabon, Denbighshire).
Edward Parrock, (no bap, bur or mar located) wife named Isabel.
Possibly son of Vespatian Parrock - listed in an indenture for West Felton in
1609.
West Felton was the place of origin of many (possibly all) Paddocks / Parrocks in the area. The West Felton parish registers are extant from 1629 (with some gaps).
Development of the name Paddock from Parrock was not always strictly linear and at times the two forms were interchangeable. Thus, for example, Thomas (1781-1824) was bap as Parrock, mar as Paddock and bur as Paddock, but his two oldest children were bap as Parrock: John 1809 and Mary 1812, both at Llandysilio, Montgomeryshire (mother’s maiden name given as Francis and France respectively). Mary may have died young, but all subsequent references to John are as Paddock (he mar Catharine Vaughan on 10 Jun 1833 at Oswestry and the couple settled at Melverley).
Details also sent by e-mail and further information available on request.
Sincere regards,
Rory
