Lois and John,
I wonder if the family story of having Indian heritage is similar to the
story so many of us have of "three brothers came to America....".
Upon researching the story we often find some truth but also some
distortion. I have no facts to contribute but here is a story handed down
in the Pace family line I follow.
William (B c1745) of Scott County Virginia had a son, Edward. I follow the
Edward(1790-1874)and Susannah Foster Pace line through their son Charles
Wesley (1827-1908).
Charles Wesley's son, Charles Wesley Jr. (1867-1937) had three daughters who
were interested in family history and one, Margaret Pace Nostrand, wrote a
history of her family. This has been saved by another daughter, Shirley
Pace Newfarmer. The following is from Margaret's history:
"During the day, as we covered the miles in Daddy's[C.W.Jr.] improvised
pickup, we'd talk or sing, or sometimes I'd[Margaret] nap. It must have been
about then that he told me about the Indian in our ancestry, a fact of which
he was proud. (And consequently, so was I).
As nearly as Shirley and I can figure out, it was our great-great
grandfather Edward Pace [error as their GGgrandfather was William] who
married an Indian maiden, perhaps during the family exodus from Virginia to
Indiana. We consider the Osage tribe a possibility. His son [Edward] was
the one who had the Indian features. This information came to us from Sue
Pace Hicks, our cousin who spent years accumulating facts and dates for a
Pace genealogy book. A quote from her is as follows:
'You see, our great grandfather is the one who supposedly resembled an
Indian. it is his mother whose maiden name I cannot find. She is the only
one of all the Pace wives in our line as far back as I have records of
proof, she is the only wife whose maiden name I do not know; whose maiden
name I cannot find after diligent, thorough research of many, many years.
Time and again I have been in three different counties where information on
her should be found. I have checked marriage records, wills in which she
may have been named by her father, and many other kinds of records, but as
of now I have no succeeded in my search. Our great-grandfather has high
cheekbones, a large aquiline nose, dark skin. I have a picture of him,
taken when he was quite old. He has long white hair, white beard and
whiskers and the Indian nose.'"
Leafy Susannah Pace Hicks is a descendent of Edward through his son Richard
Foster. She researched her Pace family for over twenty years.
I had never seen a picture of Edward until the website Pacepix was
established. There is a picture of Edward, the son of William, just as
described by L. Susannah, long white hair and all.
William is discussed at length in the Casey book "Pace Family History" found
on line at the RCasey site or through the Pace Network. Just as L. Susannah
wrote, it would seem that the question of William's wife/wives is still
being debated.
