I am not sure how/why this would pertain to your Joseph, but the
only time I have ever seen the S.J. follow a name in that fashion, sort
of like a tile such as PhD, Esq, etc, is as an abbreviation for Society
of Jesus, denoting the Catholic Jesuit Society.
Many times I have seen Fr. So-and-so S.J. but I am unsure if
that would apply for laymen or not? I am also unsure of the Pace
religious preference? Is it possible Joseph was Catholic? If so it is
then possible that is what the S.J. stood for, perhaps he was a lay
member of the society.
Again, this may not be the answer, but it's the only time I have
seen that designation.

Joseph is listed as follows:
Pace Joseph ( S.J.) 43 M W
What does the (S.J.) denote?
)
That is also used in the Fluvanna birth register following
his name at the birth of daughter Ann Elizabeth,
June 14,1854. Again at the birth of a son,Joseph Leake,
Mar.6,1856.
There is another Joseph listed as Joseph Sr.(son of Robert)
at the birth of Son ,Albert, Jan 1, 1854.
Can't be the same Joseph with two children born in 1854.
