Just a little preliminary work has shown that a DNA project is more complex
than it would seem at first. Rather than post lengthy messages to Pace-L, I
have set up a page on the Pace Network to record the latest developments.
There are privacy issues, cost issues, evaluating which labs are best, and
learning to interpret the results.

I invite all of you to take a look. There will be more coming and links to
sites that provide helpful information. If you know of a site that should
be included, please let me know.

A long response from the coordinator of the Strickland study is my first
post. From it you will learn that there are DNA "markers" and that it
requires a 24 or more marker match to get any really significant results,
with the cost per person being $250 or more. He suggests what might be a
userful approach here -- putting prospective donors on a list, with their
Pace lines, and others from that same line who are ineligible for the study
then will sponsor a donor and help pay for that person's test. That is a
possible alternative to setting up a general fund, which could open a can of
worms (for example, if there are more willing donors than the fund will
support, how do you choose which ones to fund?)

I'll do what I can on the Pace Network to coordinate this effort, but I have
a lot of catchup that should be done -- a whole bunch of postings on Pace
Pix that have piled up while I was out of town for the summer, for example.
