Below is a link to the home page for the official land patent records
site (Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office)- indeed a helpful
research tool. Patents for the states which had land issued under this
system (exclusive of the original thirteen colonies) are searchable
through a user-friendly interface. There is a FAQ section which explains
the system. Use of the "standard" search tab rather than the "basic"
tab allows more flexibility in searching. For example, once you
determine that a particular ancestor lived in a certain section, then
you can search again, omitting the surname entirely and specifying only
on that section to see who lived close by--or, you could search adjacent
sections as desired.

A valuable companion site is the "Graphical Display of the Federal
Township and Range System," which has a helpful explantion and color
depictions of the standard layout. It's handy to bookmark this site and
keep a printout of this info nearby, since it provides a great
visualization of the grid numbers in relation to each other.

One further note...for my own purposes I devised an Excel spreadsheet
which emulates the grid layout of the BLM scheme. Into it is entered
data gleaned from BLM searches. This makes it even easier to see where
specific folks lived in relation to each other and can be retained in a
permanent format customized as you need.

Subject: [PACE-L] ARKANSAS LAND RECORDS
I don't know what all the numbers mean about sec., twp, rng, but it
appears to me that ALSEY PACE is situated very near (or related to)
CHRISTOPHER S. PACE.
Does anyone know who this CHRISTOPHER S. PACE is? Does anyone have any
experience with these Bureau of Land Records?
