Thanks for the information about John Hartwell Pace. He doesn’t seem to fit
any of the known Hartwell Paces of VA: Hartwell Pace b.1805, d. 1857 m.
Nancy Allen – Henry Co, VA; Hartwell Pace b. 1845 VA m. ?, d.bef. 1892, of
Pittsylvania Co, VA; Hartwell W. Pace b. 1834 VA d. aft 1896 OK; Hartwell
Pace b. 1811 VA m. Mary in Henrico Co, VA in 1850.

Since John Hartwell Pace m. Fannie H. Houchins on 5/27/1875 he should be on
the 1880 VA census but unfortunately I did not find him there. But you
should be able to find him living with his parents on the 1860 or 1870 census
(Fluvanna Co, I assume). Does anyone have this information? There is no
young John H.Pace on the 1850 VA census, so I guess he was born after 1850.

It is interesting that there were a large number of marriages between closely
related Paces and various Houchins/Houchens in VA as well as a few
Pace/Houchins marriages among their descendants in KY. Here are the details:

John H. Pace b. 1721/22 m. Susanna Houchins in 1743 Goochland Co, VA. He was
a grandson of John Pace of Middlesex and she was a daughter of an Edward
Houchins.

Joseph Pace, Jr. b. 1741 m. Elizabeth Lucy Houchins on1/19/1795 in Goochland
Co, VA. She was daughter of Edward Houchins II (possibly son of Edward
above.)

Jesse Houchins m. Susannah Pace 1/1/1802 Greenbrier Co,VA. She was
granddaughter of JosephPace, Sr. and Ann Basford.

Edward M. Pace, Jr. m. Rachel Houchins 7/27/1820 Warren Co,KY. He was a
grandson of John H. Pace and Susanna Houchins.

William Houchins m. Elizabeth Pace 6/21/1823 Warren Co, KY. She was
granddaughter of John H. Pace and Susanna Houchins.

E. J. Houchins (male) m. A. B. Pace 5/23/1892 Albemarle Co,VA. She was
great granddaughter of Joseph Pace, Jr. and Elizabeth Lucy Houchins

There were also several marriages between Paces and Hutchens (or Hutchins)
which was probably a spelling variation of Houchins:

Frederick J. Hutchens m. Permelia Pace b. 1797 Henry Co,VA. She was gd of
William Pace and Susannah West.

William G. Hutchens m. Jane D. Pace b. abt 1810. She was gd of William Pace
and Susannah West.

George Davis Pace b. 1811 m. Elizabeth Lucinda Hutchins 10/20/1834 Lancaster
Co, VA. He was grandson of Williamson Pace and Crissy Sanders of Middlesex
Co, VA. She was dau. of Richard Hutchins.


Hamilton Hutchens m. Lucy A. Pace b. abt 1810. She was gd of William Pace
and Susannah West.

Perry Hutchens m. Millie Nunn Pace b. 7/1845. She was great gd of William
Pace and Susannah West, and he was son of William G. Hutchens.

Also in Barren Co, KY there was a marriage of James M.Hutchens to an
Elizabeth Pace on 10/20/1842.

All of these Paces are known descendants of John Pace of Middlesex, circa
1662.

An investigation of Houchins/Hutchins genealogy in VA would probably be very
useful in identifying the relationships of these Paces and Houchins in early
VA and may help identify the ancestry of John Hartwell Pace and his wife as
well as other VA Paces.
